    Frequently Asked Questions: Veteran Services

Discharge documents, Massachusetts state benefits, and healthcare eligibility.

Why is recovering the DD-214 so important?

The DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) is the single most critical military document. It proves active duty service, character of discharge, and honorable status. Without it, veterans cannot enroll in VA healthcare, file service-connected disability claims, access VA home loans, or receive military burial honors.

How long does DD-214 retrieval take?

Standard electronic NPRC archive requests typically take 2 to 6 weeks. For urgent emergency situations (such as impending homelessness, critical medical triage, or funeral arrangements), we can expedite requests directly through congressional constituent liaisons.

Do I have to pay anything for veteran service advocacy?

Never. All veteran assistance, document recovery, and benefits advocacy at Quinsigamond Village Community Center are 100% free. We believe our veterans have already paid their dues through their honorable service.

Can surviving spouses of deceased veterans receive assistance?

Yes! Surviving spouses and dependent children can receive full assistance retrieving service records, filing for VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), and accessing Massachusetts Chapter 115 surviving spouse benefits.
